I WAS, QUITE LITERALLY, SHOCKED INTO ACTION

My name is Greg Page. Many people may remember me as the Original Yellow Wiggle.
On 17 January 2020, I suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. My heart suddenly stopped beating. Luckily for me though, bystanders were able to call 000, use CPR to push hard and fast on my chest, and use an AED to shock my heart back into a normal rhythm.
But, I wasn’t just shocked back to life – I was shocked into action.
Until that night, I knew very little about sudden cardiac arrest.
When my heart stopped beating, I relied entirely on the people around me. Fortunately, THEY knew about it, and they recognised what was happening. They called for help. They started CPR. They used an AED.
Their deliberate, confident actions shocked me back to life. And because of them, I get to take action today — and hopefully help save other lives too.
When someone’s heart suddenly stops beating, they don’t get to choose who is nearby. They rely on whoever happens to be there to recognise the emergency and start the chain of survival:
Call. Push. Shock.
That’s what gave me the best possible chance to live.
So, what will it take to shock you into action?
Will it be the statistics?
• More than 32,000 Australians suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year.
• Fewer than 1 in 20 survive.
• In less than 2% of cases is an AED used by a member of the public before paramedics arrive.
Will it be understanding that while CPR is vital, it’s the AED that can actually restart a heart?
-
Or will it be personal experience?
-
Have you been a responder?
-
Have you lost someone?
-
Have you survived?
Whatever it is, we need more people to be Shocked Into Action.
Because when more people are ready to act, more people will have the chance to be shocked back to life.
And if — God forbid — your heart suddenly stops beating one day, you will be relying on whoever is around you at that moment. So, help spread awareness, just in case.
Let’s make sure they're ready.
